Keep in mind that these are Rasmussen/Fox, which strangely seem to have a more Republican bent than regular Rasmussen polls.

These are pretty remarkable (2.00 / 1)

numbers - except for Ohio which seems like an outlier.

Re: These are pretty remarkable (2.00 / 1)

Is Ohio tone deaf? One of the worst economies in America, and McCain is hanging in there? What the heck is going on in Ohio? Even Pat Buchanan says McCain has NO CHANCE in Ohio due to his free trade stances. What's going on? Anyone with an Ohio perspective care to tell us what's going on?

Well, I have an idea (2.00 / 2)

But I can't say it here.

This is just one poll. If it's right, then, well, sadly I'm right. If it's wrong, then I'll be happily wrong about OH.

I also think turnout will work very much in our favor in OH. AA turnout in 2004 was very poor, and some of these polls may not factor in increased turnout from AA and other minority communities.

I agree with your unmentionable idea.

C'mon, you can say it. (none / 0)

Didn't like 16% of the primary voters admit to it?

Re: Obama Takes Lead in MO!! (2.00 / 1)

People appear to be responding negatively to McCain's very erratic and often forgetful negative attacks. I think they appreciate Obama's steady, thoughtful leadership abilities. McCain did show his mettle during the Keating 5 scandal - and he wasn't really punished for it, despite the fact that he is the only Senator ever rebuked by Congress to run for President. I expect the polls to get even better as people connect the fact that McCain has already demonstrated that he is not someone you could trust in a serious economic crisis. It saddens me that someone considered a war hero of this country would stoop to lying, distorting facts, and encouraging his supporters to attack another person's character. I also think that as more people become aware of the tax scam that he calls a health plan they will abandon his campaign entirely.

by Jeter on Mon Oct 06, 2008 at 07:23:37 PM EST

Part of this falls on McCain's head... (2.00 / 2)

He probably STILL would have lost, but he turned his campaign over to the Rove Jr. team, and it has been down-hill since....

He could have lost with Honor, but I don't think he has much of that attribute left.

You're saying he could've been Bob Dole? (none / 0)

Bob Dole doesn't appreciate being talked about in the same context as John McCain's campaign.  Bob Dole ran an honorable campaign with a qualified VP candidate, Jack Kemp.  Bob Dole never tried to weasel sympathy over his war record to manipulate voters.  Bob Dole.  Bob Dole.  Bob Do...zzzzzz.

He's leading in NC too. (2.00 / 1)

OH seems a lone holdout at this point.

GOP controls the news media in OH (2.00 / 4)

so those who rely on it to make their decisions are being fed bogus poll numbers and biased news reporting.  They're also being fed a daily diet of faux scandals and false innuendo about Dem officeholders.

Bring Bill Clinton to Ohio, maybe even consider running some tv and radio ads that feature Clinton and Obama.  It will help.

Re: GOP controls the news media in OH (none / 0)

Wrong.  The media is as varied as the state itself.

If anything Ohio is a "holdout" - even though I don't believe that to be true - because the state is FAR from homogeneous.

The northern part of the state is the rustbelt filled with former blue collar factory workers who remember the good ol' days back when companies pitted black workers against white ones.

The central area has evolved into a more white collar region being the capital area and home to several Fortune 500 companies.

The southern part isn't even the same.  Southeast you have Appalachia - poverty, poverty and poverty.

Southwest you have Ohio's Bible Belt which is far from free of Kentucky's influence.  Despite the fact that Ohio had two Democratic senators in John Glenn and Howard Metzenbaum for years, it got swept up in the 90s red wave and hasn't looked back since.

Only now is it happening.

The RCP average is +3.5

Update: WaPo/ABC Poll sez Obama + 6 points in OH (2.00 / 4)

Its the economy, folks.

Rasmussen polls in Ohio late in the campaign are always "inaccurate".  In 2006, they had Sherrod Brown down by 10 pts in his Senate race a few weeks out, but he won anyway.

Thanks for the correction (none / 0)

but I don't recall it that way. Perhaps those were the Mason Dixon polls. Either way, the polling was way off for Brown even this late in the game.

Re: Obama Takes Lead in MO!! (none / 0)

These results are odd. It's almost as if Southern Populists (all of them white practically) are coming home due to the economic turmoil, while Ohio seems unfazed. Even Minnesota has moved as much as the rest of the country, even accounting for McCain advertising. Is it simply that we had much more room to grow in the South? I say fuck Ohio and let's win this think elsewhere.

Re: Obama Takes Lead in MO!! (none / 0)

Sorry, I mean Minnesota has not moved with the country. I bet the gains in Missouri are partially due to "Missourah." It really looks like the North was already in the bag, relatively speaking, while the South is starting to come alive for Democrats BIG TIME. Thank goodness my 401K is tanking!

Re: Obama Takes Lead in MO!! (2.00 / 2)

I won't miss seeing McCain and/or Palin on the telly so much in just a few weeks.

I also don't want to hear or think about Ohio for another 3 years or so.

If there is a really bad depression, do you think they'll mind very much if I grow a little weed in the basement for my own use?

Re: Obama Takes Lead in MO!! (2.00 / 5)

I had to come out of my self imposed MYDD exile to celebrate this MO poll.  I am a MO native who has volunteered countless hours for the Obama campaign.  During all of this time I secretly believed there was no real hope for him here, but I am starting to get my hopes up.  But I am also a Buffalo Bills fan who just watched his get dismantled on tv Sunday, so my hopes must be tempered.

Regardless of overall pessimism about my native state, he does not need it to win.  For what its worth, there is very little McCain organization in my area whereas in 2004 Bush soldiers were everywhere.

Keep it up (none / 0)

The ground game is what's going to win this for Obama, if anything is.

It's pretty exciting talking to Obama's paid staffers here in Minnesota, that's for sure.
