That makes today's average 8.75, by my reckoning. Even with DK's numbers tossed out, this looks like a remarkebly consistent pattern - Obama creeping up ever so slowly towards double-digits. His job now is to project calm, steady and likable in the last two debates, as they're probably the last real obstacles to his winning.

I agree, his job in these last two debates (none / 0)

is to close the deal.

I know McCain wants the 30 day slime war, keep the press talking Ayers and Keating etc...

But, this is less about McCain anymore, this is a conversation between Obama and the American people.

They are starting to think, "OK, he doesn't seem scary, he seems calm, thoughtful...But, does he get ME? Does he understand what I need, does he know who I am?"

That is the last bit he needs to do to close the deal.

Convince the vast middle class, that even though he doesn't look like them, and his name sounds different then theirs, he knows who they are.

If he gets that bridge crossed, that bridge called trust, it doesn't matter how much crap McCain throws up there..."

The boat is leaking, the house is on fire, there is a storm approaching, and some radical from the sixties that obama briefly knew is just noise in the background compared to the issue of trust.

Most definitely, and he will.

For what it's worth, Bill Clinton was in the same position in 1992 during the debates - strong lead in the polls, but still considered an unknown quantity by many. I remember what he did during the debates was drop names of people that endorsed his candidacy. Often, these were people that would have been expected to support Bush.

What I would LOVE to see is Obama during the debate announce he is going to convine a Presidential committee of economic advisors to really look at the issues that caused this meltdown, and drop a couple of names...maybe someone like Warren Buffet?

Throw the specificity thing right back in McCain's camp....

The Media is Hilarious. (none / 0)

They see these numbers, they see Obama winning the election even in states where he's just approaching double digits. And their lead is always, "What does this mean?" "What Will the McCain Campaign Do To Win?"

Because the alternate headline, "McCain Campaign Can Only Win Through Deus Ex Macchina" is much less interesting.

"Hey, check it out. You just had yourself a glue OD. So you're learning another lesson. Don't do too much glue, or your night sucks."
